Hello and welcome to JaWavedit !

Here is supposed to appear a perfect hyper-
linked fashioned help system. Unfortunately,
we haven't got so far. You see, this is just
a beta. We hope that you find a lot of errors
(and proposals) and mail them to us.

Let's come to some words on how to use
JaWavedit:

The main purpose is to edit existing audio-files.
Unfortunately, it's not possible to record:
This is not implemented in Java yet. And to
remain platform-independent we did not want to
write specific drivers.

For the usage of the program, we propose that
you just try all functions to see how they
work and what they do. The most important
functions are doubled on the button bar.
Resting some time on a button will show a
tooltip with the name of its function. The
usage is oriented at Cool Edit for Windows.

Nonetheless there are some things which are
good to know about:
1. JaWavedit treats every audio file as 16bit
stereo. When you open a file, it is converted
automatically to 16bit stereo. On saving, it
is reconverted. The original format of the file
is displayed at the 2nd line under the graph.
In order to change the format in which the file
will be saved, choose "Format" in the menu
"File".

2. Due to Java's limits, playing is only possible
in 8bit, mono, 8000Hz. But since JaWavedit handles
this automatically by converting appropriately
during playing, you needn't care about this. On
the other hand, that explains the noise and missing
trebles when playing. In spite of that, your edits
are always in the best possible quality.

3. The module concept of JaWavedit makes it
possible for you to develop your own modules. These
are ordinary java classes implementing
"SimpleModule" or "StereoModule". For documentation,
necessary class files and some demo modules,
have a look in the directory "MDK" (Module
Construction Kit).

4. Notes on installation are included in the files
"readme.txt" and the script files, "jw" (Unix)
and "JaWavedit_run.bat" (Windows).

Well, you managed to read all this, so for now
we wish you happy editing !

Florian, Niels and Robin
