Ethos's Peripheral Evolution Demo
Augest 31, 1995

This is the first program that even approches what could be called a Demo for
OS/2!

   A "demo" is a program which demonstrate its creators' skills in coding,
   music, and visual arts. They do not simply play back pre-rendered
   animations such as FLIs, MPEGs, and AVIs, but instead calculate their
   images "on the fly". Similarly, the music is never a straight recording,
   but generated in realtime as well.

The Program
~~~ ~~~~~~~
The final demo was constructed in about 2 weeks, with a few months of basic
routine coding preceding.  It is our first Public Domain OS/2 program, and
since our members are very busy we cannot provide ANY support.  If it does not
work on your machine I recommend you ask others on UseNet, FidoNet or IRC who
have got it to work, they may be willing to help.
You run the program by typing 'PE' at an OS/2 window.  It should go into
fullscreen text mode and begin loading portions of the demo from the disk.
Due to the size of the program (Over 5M!) this will take awile and on 8M
machines it may swap too much to be usable.  After this initial load the music
should start playing and after a few moments it should switch to a white
screen, after that the demo will run to completion, about 12 minutes in total.
Unlike most demo's we didn't spend much time optimizing the code to squeeze
every ounce of speed out of it.  It's all pure C++ compiled with MetaWare's
High C++ compiler.
The Graphics
~~~ ~~~~~~~~
This demo runs in 320x200 256 color fullscreen, meaning it literally takes
over your computer! It does not use DIVE or any other IBM provided toolkit,
as such things were not availible when we started the demo and are only
entering Beta test on this date. While it is running, do not press Ctrl-Esc
or Alt-Esc as it make cause the demo to get an access violation.

The Music
~~~ ~~~~~
You may notice that the music that is playing is not your standard MIDI,
that's because it's not MIDI!  It's actually a S3M file playing in the
background!  For those of you who are not familiar with this form of music..
   A S3M file is very similar to a MOD, in that it has stored digital samples
   and note information.  The song is composed of these digital instruments
   being played at specific volumes and frequencies.  This is sometimes known
   as Digital Mixing or Wave Table Synthesis.
                -- Culus of Ethos
You can enjoy the S3M's on their own by running music, which will play all
of the music and exit.
BTW, the Music requires MMPM/2 and the demo will not run without the Music.
Ethos
~~~~~
All of Ethos's member's meet on IRC and communicate through the 'net. We have
members in both Canada and the States, from Montreal to Texas. This entire
demo was composed without any of the members actually meeting, which too our
knowledge makes this demo the first international collaberative effort!

Enjoy!
